Hello my dears,
Today, I am starting a short series about recipes for camping and road trips on my blog Knusperstuebchen. As you already know, we were on a road trip to Portugal. Because of that, I was thinking about how I could create some culinary highlights before going on such a trip, so that we wouldn’t have to take the next best exit and visit one of those infamous fast food restaurants.
Would you like to join us on our culinary road trip?
For this series of posts, I will be supported by Volkswagen*. Volkswagen has launched a Pinterest board about food, so I thought it would be a good idea to add a few road trip recipes. We always dreamt of doing a tour of Cornwall and Ireland in a Volkswagen Bulli. And when we cruised through the south of England in the last few years, we saw more than one of these iconic buses. Well, who knows, maybe we will also sit in such a beautiful VW bus someday. But of course, our road trips are still lots of fun anyway. We’ve already been on six or seven road trips so far. We always want to plan everything beforehand and then, oops, there is only about a week of time left…
But this time, I have taken some time to think about what kind of food to take along. Which food can be packed well and kept for a few days? First of all, I followed the wishes of my husband, who insisted on taking a few cinnamon rolls on our trip.
Fluffy bread made of cinnamon rolls
Cinnamon rolls? All individually wrapped. Oh dear, in my mind I already saw them rolling through the car, not us enjoying them. But then I had the idea to make a cinnamon roll bread. I knew, we would definitely take a knife along. No sooner said than done. I gave it a try and baked some. Simply because of the lovely scent of the bread, it passed all tests. Fluffy-soft, slightly sweet and cinnamonic. Just perfect for my beloved “cinnamonoholic” Well, in my opinion we could have hit the road right away. However, I still needed to conduct one final test: the overnight test.
The next morning I unwrapped the cinnamon roll bread and it was still as soft and tasty as yesterday. First mission: accomplished!
What do you think? Will you bake some lovely cinnamon bread for breakfast?
Recipe as PDF: Click

- Loaf Tin
- Dough:
- 7g dry yeast or 25g fresh yeast
- 450g flour
- 80g brown sugar
- 50g softened butter
- 180ml lukewarm milk
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1tsp cardamom
- pinch of salt
- Filling
- 70g butter
- 70g brown sugar
- 2tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp cardamom
- ½tsp vanilla bean
- Coarse sugar
- 1 Egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk
- First, mix yeast, sugar and lukewarm milk in a bowl, leave covered for 10 minutes.
- Now, add flour and the rest of the ingredients. Knead well until the dough is soft and bouncy. Leave the dough covered for 120 minutes.
- Meanwhile, combine sugar, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla and soften the butter.
- Knead the dough once again before spreading it into a rectangle on a floured surface, and then coat it with the softened butter. Spread the sugar-cinnamon-mixture on the dough. Curl the dough into a long roll, cut in two and put both of the rolls next to each other onto baking paper.
- Cut the rolls into 2 cm thick pieces, but don’t cut fully through. Push the pieces to the left and to the right so that you can see the cinnamon inside of the dough. Now, cover the ends and sides with baking paper and press the dough together until it fits in the loaf tin.
- Put the dough on the baking paper into the loaf tin and let it rest for 30 minutes. Now, whisk together milk and egg yolk and spread it on the dough. Sprinkle with coarse sugar and bake at 180 degrees for 30 up to 45 minutes until it’s golden brown, if necessary cover with foil.
- Wait for it to cool down a bit, and then turn upside down. Tastes very good straight out of the oven or lightly coated with butter.
What would you take along on a road trip? I am really looking forward to the next recipes. Until then, let me know about your experiences.
All the best,
Sarah
